Fortunately, the Switch 2 version is a solid revision that’s almost on par with the PlayStation 5 version, which we reviewed here. If the functional but compromised original Switch port for Hogwarts Legacy was miraculous for simply existing, this Switch 2 version is a notable, welcome upgrade. The improved visual detail and loading times, while naturally not comparable to the PlayStation 5 (here’s our full review of that) and Xbox Series X, now look easily in the same league as the last gen versions – if not better. The most high-profile third party game for the Switch 2 is a port of Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion Phantom Liberty. There are only four Nintendo Switch 2 exclusives games so far – two from Nintendo and two from third party publishers – but many of the other games do have some new Switch 2 features, like mouse support or new modes.

Apart from being one of the best games of the year – and one of the best co-op games of all time – the Switch 2 version of Split Fiction is very instructive in terms of what should be expected of third party ports in general. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle grabs the hearts of fans of the famous archaeologist from the very first minutes. However, MachineGames’ game falls a little below expectations. It sits on the border of an action game and an adventure game.

The Switch 2 is more powerful, and games run better in every way, but Nintendo routinely proves that if you design games specific to hardware, you’ll get more out of them—not just in graphics but in controls and gameplay. The original Switch was notorious for Joy-Con drift, a hardware issue that caused the joysticks to register movement even if you weren’t touching them. Nintendo originally didn’t acknowledge Joy-Con drift, but later began repairing them for free after widespread outcry.

Instead, all you have to do is compare the Switch 2’s display to devices of this size and price. Even if the screen is LCD, the Switch 2 has a larger, brighter, and better-looking display than many other LCD-based handhelds that cost more. Yes, once you go OLED, it’s hard to go back, but when you’re in the thick of a game, whether or not blacks are dark grays isn’t going to be what breaks any suspension of disbelief. Oh, and don’t peel off the screen’s protective plastic layer or you might just shatter the whole thing. Actually getting into Switch 2 games is more enjoyable than maneuvering around Nintendo’s fascination with digital rights management, or DRM.

It’s possible to just enter some public figure’s house, have a look around, open their chests and lockboxes, rob them of their coins, and the worst I’ll receive is a mild scolding.
